Our annual ice-cream social, annual meeting and dance at Stewart Park
We will have an amazing quartet playing for us: Oliver Scanlon. and Tim Ball on fiddles, Alex Fortier on keyboard and Alyssa Valerio on flute! Nancy Spero will be calling, and there will be free ice cream!
Oliver Scanlon met his fiddle mentor, Pete Sutherland, at the age of nine and went on to become the youngest member of Pete’s long-running dance band The Clayfoot Strutters and a cofounder of the trio Pete’s Posse. Now living in Syracuse, Oliver continues to perform with a variety of musicians including the popular contradance quartet Stove Dragon.
Alyssa Valerio is an Irish flute player from Brattleboro, Vermont, where she has studied with Keith Murphy and Becky Tracy. A regular in local sessions since 2022, she continues to build a wide repertoire, grounded in precise listening, extensive exploration of recordings, and active participation in the tradition.
Tim Ball is an accomplished American fiddler, singer, and guitarist whose playing is rooted in the rich traditions of Ireland, New England, Canada, and Appalachia. With over two decades of experience performing in Celtic and contra dance ensembles, Tim has built a reputation for his expressive style and deep musical knowledge.
Alex Fortier has been studying and playing piano in various idioms since the age of six. His accompaniment style, influenced by the music of New England, Quebec, and Cape Breton, evidences a love of tradition and a penchant for harmonic substitutions and development.
Nancy Spero has been calling contra dances, square dances, and community/family dances throughout the Northeast and other areas since 1988. She will have you movin’ and groovin’ to the music in no time! She especially loves calling when the music and dances she chooses have great synergy and flow together. The music and dancers then become one, and joy overflows.
